How to Calculate Your BMI
By Editorial Team ·
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick way to check whether your weight falls in a healthy range for your height.
The formula
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²
For imperial units: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) / height (in)².
Interpreting the result
| BMI range | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obese |
BMI doesn’t distinguish muscle from fat, so treat it as a first screen, not a diagnosis. Try the BMI Calculator.
